Seattle, Washington. February 13th, 2014. For its leadership in pursuing globally responsible electronics recycling, Armstrong World Industries earned an e-Stewards® Enterprise designation, announced the environmental nonprofit group Basel Action Network (BAN) today.
As an e-Stewards Enterprise, Armstrong, the international floor and ceiling manufacturer, pledges to do its part to prevent the hazardous materials in electronic waste (e-waste) from causing harm to people and the environment, particularly in developing countries. Other e-Stewards Enterprises include Boeing, Bank of America, the cities of Seattle and San Francisco, and Staples.
Armstrong CIO Tony Lombardi said, “Sustainability practices are very important to us. We have been leaders in recycling our electronics for many years, and it’s good to be affiliated with organizations that share our values and our commitment to responsible citizenship. I am very pleased to be designated an e-Stewards Enterprise.â€
“At this pivotal moment in the worldwide e-waste crisis, Armstrong joins a growing number of business, academic and governmental leaders taking action to stem a toxic tide,†said Jim Puckett, Executive Director of BAN. “We are impressed by Armstrong’s act of leadership on this issue.â€
As an e-Stewards Enterprise, Armstrong commits to using, when possible, e-Stewards certified electronics recyclers. e-Stewards recyclers undergo an independent audit each year to show they will not export hazardous e-waste to developing countries, dump such waste into municipal landfills, nor use prison labor for managing such waste. Further, they use state-of-the-art data destruction technologies and practices to prevent loss of private data.
Over 70 environmental groups and over 70 other Enterprises endorse the program, which was developed by BAN.
